BGSA Non-Academic Career Fair

April 29 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

JOIN US TO LEARN MORE ABOUT NON-ACADEMIC CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FIELD OF ECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY! SPEAKERS INCLUDE:

Jeff Warren – Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, UNC Chapel Hill
Dr. Warren is currently the head of UNC’s Collaboratory, an organization created to utilize and disseminate the research expertise across the University of North Carolina System for practical use by state and local government. Trained in marine geology, Dr. Warren has been a science policymaker since 2004 advocating for coastal management. He has also previously served as the science advisor for the NC Senate, and the coastal hazards policy specialist for the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management.

Bronwyn Williams – Ph.D. in Systematics and Evolution, University of Alberta
Dr. Williams is currently a Research Curator at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Her research focuses on the taxonomy, systematics, and phylogeny of crayfishes and two groups of crayfish symbionts. She is particularly interested in understanding the evolution of the symbiosis. Bronwyn takes an integrative research approach, using a variety of data types and merging tools from several disciplines including taxonomy, systematics, biogeography, genomics, phylogenetics, phylogeography, population genetics, and community ecology.

Laura Warman – Ph.D. in Ecology, University of South Wales
Dr. Warman is the grant manager at Triangle Land Conservancy. She did a post-doc with the University of Hawai’i and the US Forest Service, Hawai’i. After that, she moved away from academia and worked at a non-profit in Mexico, a small company translating and editing scientific papers with the goal of trying to remove language barriers and increase the odds of Spanish-speaking research getting published. Her main research interests are focused on plant ecology, but she wears many hats!

Kevin Potter – Ph.D. in Forestry, Forest Ecology, and Genetics, NC State University
Dr. Potter is currently a Research Ecologist at the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center of the USDA Forest Service’s Southern Research Station. He is a landscape ecologist and conservation geneticist who applies the disciplines of landscape ecology, conservation biology and population genetics to assess and mitigate threats to tree species and forest communities, particularly across broad scales. His research work includes conservation assessments of vulnerable tree species, range-wide genetic diversity studies of tree species at risk, and broad-scale studies of the ecosystem functions associated with biodiversity.
