We are proud of our alumni and grateful for the many ways they support our educational and research missions. Alumni support the Department of Biology financially, by offering internships to our students, and by serving on our External Advisory Board. Read more below.

Give to Biology

The Department of Biology depends on the generous gifts of our friends, patrons, and alumni to ensure the margin of excellence we enjoy. Private gifts from generous donors help to sustain the Department’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and service. Such gifts help to provide the best possible education for our undergraduate and graduate students, build a lively intellectual community, and support the cutting edge work of our faculty and researchers.

Zena Cardman

Class of 2010

Zena Cardman, (BS in Biology, MS in Marine Science), joined NASA’s 2017 Astronaut Candidate Class at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, and after completion this summer, will be assigned technical duties until receiving her first flight assignment.

Cardman’s experience as an undergraduate at UNC provided her with several formative opportunities to combine biological research and travel. In 2008, with support from a Burch Fellowship, she spent a summer in British Columbia and the Canadian Arctic studying astrobiology — an interdisciplinary field of science that involves the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe.
