CONGRATULATIONS ALL 2020 GRADUATES! Please see the following special video messages:

This registration database will open in November (seniors will be notified via email) and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2020. We cannot promise that we will have a seat and a certificate for you if you have not registered by the deadline.

  • The May 2020 Biology Graduation Ceremony is for Biology undergraduate majors/2nd majors/minors who graduated in Aug/Dec 2019 or who plan to graduate in May/Aug/Dec 2020.
  • Graduating seniors must register if you plan to attend the ceremony so that we can have a seat and a certificate for you. Each senior’s name will be called, you will walk across the stage (please wear your cap and gown) and you will receive a Certificate of Congratulations from our Biology Chair.
  • This is a ceremonial event only. Please note that we do NOT give out diplomas the day of the ceremony. Participation in this event does not validate the completion of your degree. Only the Chancellor can officially confer your degree at the UNC Commencement Ceremony, which is held in Kenan Stadium.
  • Please note that the ceremony will NOT be filmed or live-streamed.
  • You do NOT need to respond in the database if you are not planning to attend the ceremony.
  • We are NOT able to mail certificates to those not in attendance.
  • NO TICKETS NEEDED – bring as many guests as you want!
  • Where

Carmichael Arena, 310 South Road, Chapel Hill, 27599.

There will be ample parking in the Bell Tower Parking Deck.  A monitor will be there to let in our Biology Ceremony guests.  Parking is free.  No permit is required.  Please note that this is a 3 1/2 block walk from the parking deck to Carmichael Arena. There will be golf carts to take guests back and forth to the arena.

    Special Accommodations

There will be golf carts to take guests back and forth to the ceremony and reception. If you require any accommodations or dietary restrictions, please contact Summer Montgomery at least 2 weeks in advance so the appropriate arrangements can be made.  We will make our best faith effort to accommodate requests submitted after this time frame.  Accessible parking is available along South Road and the School of Government (state-issued permit required).  Sorry – we do NOT provide accessibility parking permits for our Saturday ceremony.  There is plenty of accessible seating in Carmichael Arena (on the level that you enter, between Portals 4 & 5).  Please take a look at important information regarding access to the arena, including a seating map. There is a ramp at the Carmichael entrance.  Please note that we do not provide wheelchairs.

For graduates coming to the stage to get their certificates, there is a ramp on both ends of the stage, so no matter if you are using a wheelchair, crutches, segway, scooter, etc., you will be able to easily access and exit the stage.

    Day of Ceremony

Because there is a large ceremony ahead of the Biology Ceremony, the doors will open no earlier than 5:30 PM to allow for their guests to leave and for the staff of Carmichael to prepare the arena for our ceremony. We cannot guarantee that the Carmichael doors will be opened before 5:30 PM.

The weather can vary from temperatures in the middle 70’s to low 90’s!

There will be beverages at our reception, but those won’t be available until after the ceremony. There are water fountains in Carmichael.

Seniors – please arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. and go directly to your alphabetically assigned seat on the Carmichael Arena floor. You will see green name cards on the seats. If you do not see your name card, please come to the table on the stage to get a name card.

For safety reasons, family and friends will NOT be able to come to the Carmichael floor or stage area to take pictures before, during, and after the ceremony.

Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony on Hooker Field.
