Which Anatomy & Physiology course do I need?

Anatomy & Physiology is fundamental to professional degree programs in health sciences. Several courses in the Department of Biology address the prerequisites of certain majors and professional schools.

BIOL 251: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 credits, no lab)
This is a self-paced or correspondence course offered only through the Friday Center for Continuing Education. It does not have a lab, and it is not approved for UNC Undergraduates

BIOL 252: Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 credits)
This one semester course is aimed at fulfilling the needs of Biology majors, UNC’s allied health bachelor’s degree programs, as well as pre-medicaland pre-dental students. BIOL 252 will count in the Biology major and minor as an elective (BIOL 252/252L will count as an elective with a lab). This course and its lab will not satisfy the requirements of non-UNC professional programs that require 2 semesters of Anatomy & Physiology with labs. This course and its lab will be offered both semesters and both summer sessions.
BIOL 252L: Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab (1 credit)
This lab is NOT required for registration in BIOL 252 but is a prerequisite for NURS, RADI, NUTR, DHYG, PHAR, BMME.

BIOL 253: Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 credits)
This course will serve as the second semester of Anatomy & Physiology for professional schools requiring 2 semesters with labs (8 credits total). It requires 253L as a co-requisite and BIOL 252/252L as prerequisites. It may be counted as an Allied Science course but not as an elective for the Biology major. this course and its lab will be offered every spring semester and 2nd summer session.
BIOL 253L: Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology Lab (1 credit)
This lab requires BIOL 253 as a co-requisite.
