Biology Graduation Ceremony 2019

Saturday, May 11, 2019 – PENDING Confirmation from the University Events Office – please check back in December 2018

6:00 – 7:30 PM

Carmichael Arena

There is only ONE Biology Graduation Ceremony held each year in May.

Registration database:   The registration database for our May 2019 Biology Graduation Ceremony will open after Spring Break on Monday, March 18, 2019 and will close at 5 PM on Friday, May 3, 2019..

If you applied to graduate in May 2019 with the university, you will be able to access our registration database.  Anyone who did not apply to graduate in May 2019, please email sundance@unc.edu with your name & PID and we will be glad to grant you access so that you can register.

Registration:  Graduating seniors MUST register if you plan to attend the ceremony so that we can have a seat and a certificate for you.  Each senior’s name will be called, you will walk across the stage (please wear your cap and gown) and you will receive a Certificate of Congratulations from our Biology Chair, Dr Kerry Bloom.

This is a ceremonial event only. Please note that we do NOT give out diplomas.  Participation in this event does not validate the completion of your degree.  Only the Chancellor can officially confer your degree at the UNC Commencement Ceremony the day after our ceremony.

Please note that the ceremony will NOT be filmed or live-streamed.

You do NOT need to respond in the database if you are not attending the ceremony.

Sorry – we are not able to mail certificates to those who aren’t able to attend the ceremony.

Biology Ceremony FAQ – Biology Ceremony Information 2019 (Updated May 16, 2018)

Who can walk:  The May 2019 Biology Graduation Ceremony is for Biology undergraduate majors/2nd majors/minors who graduated in Aug/Dec 2018 or who plan to graduate in May/Aug/Dec 2019.

No tickets are needed – bring as many guests as you want!

Parking:  Parking is free!  NO PERMIT is required – no matter what the sign at the Bell Tower Parking deck says.  There will be ample parking in the Bell Tower Parking Deck.  A monitor will be there to let in our Biology Ceremony guests.  Please note that this is a 3 1/2 block  (10-15 minutes) walk from the parking deck to Carmichael Arena.  Carmichael Arena – directions and diagram

Special Accommodations:   If you require any accommodations or dietary restrictions, please contact Summer Montgomery (sundance@unc.edu) at least 2 weeks in advance so the appropriate arrangements can be made.  We will make our best faith effort to accommodate requests submitted after this time frame.  Accessible parking is available along South Road and the School of Government (state-issued permit required).  Sorry – we do NOT provide accessibility parking permits for our Saturday ceremony.  There is plenty of accessible seating in Carmichael Arena (on the level that you enter, between Portals 4 & 5).  There is a ramp at the Carmichael entrance.  Please note that neither the Biology Department or Carmichael Arena is able to provide wheelchairs.  For more details:  Bio Ceremony Accessibility Accommodations

Day of the Ceremony:  Because there is a large ceremony ahead of the Biology Ceremony, the doors will open no earlier than 5:30 PM to allow for their guests to leave and for the staff of Carmichael to prepare the arena for our ceremony.  We cannot guarantee that the Carmichael doors will be opened before 5:30 PM.

The weather can vary from temperatures in the middle 70’s to low 90’s!  YOU ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO BRING YOU OWN BOTTLED WATER!!  There will be beverages at our reception, but those won’t be available until after the ceremony.  There are water fountains in Carmichael.

Seniors – please arrive no later than 5:45 PM and go directly to your alphabetically assigned seat on the Carmichael Arena floor.  You will see green name cards on the seats.  If you do not see your name card, please come to the table on the stage to get a name card.

For safety reasons, family and friends will NOT be able to come to the Carmichael floor or stage area to take pictures before, during, and after the ceremony.

Stage Access:  For graduates coming to the stage to get their certificates, there is a ramp on both ends of the stage so no matter if you are using a wheelchair, crutches, Segway, scooter, etc. you will be able to easily access & exit the stage.

Reception:  Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony next to Carmichael on Hooker Field.
